Why College Counseling?

The college admissions process has become very complex, and researching every part of it, even with the support of your family and school counselor, is often not the most effective use of your time, energy, and resources. By working with someone who is an expert, you can focus on what’s most important–senior year classes, extracurriculars, completing the apps and essays, time with friends and family–without worrying about whether you are on schedule or completing applications and essays in the way that best presents you to colleges.

  • -Most students only experience the college admissions process once, but I support students through it every year. As a client, you can trust that I am familiar with all the little details of applying to college so you don’t have to become an admissions expert yourself.

-College admissions are continually changing: admission rates, application platforms, and standardized test policies are just a few of the elements that can vary from year to year. Parents often find that their knowledge of the college application process based on their own experience is no longer applicable in today’s admissions landscape. I keep up with trends and changes so you get the most up-to-date advice.

-At times, it will seem like everyone is an “expert” on college admissions and what colleges are looking for—your friends, your extended family, random people online, your dentist—you get the idea. Sometimes they have helpful insights; sometimes they are misinformed. As an experienced and qualified counselor, I can help you sort out the good advice from the bad.

-I prioritize professional development, and network with a community of other highly experienced counselors to make sure that I am continually reassessing my knowledge and practices with the input of other experts.

  • -College applications are complicated, with many deadlines and moving parts. Often, my students need to complete three or more different applications, usually including the Common Application, the UC Application, and other state or private school applications. In addition to filling in basic information, they need to complete essays for each college, write activity descriptions, request letters of recommendation, send in transcripts, send in standardized test scores… and I’m just getting started. I organize this process for you.

    - From the moment we start working together, I provide structure. Once you have a finalized college list, we work together to create a schedule with regular deadlines to make sure that all your tasks are completed in a timely way to minimize stress and ensure your applications are submitted well before the deadline.

-Some tasks can get a little overwhelming, like essays that need to go through multiple revisions, or organizing all your extracurricular activities to best show off your accomplishments in high school. I break down every aspect of the college application process into a series of manageable steps.

  • -I offer an outside, expert perspective throughout the college admissions process. Traditionally, this has been a role filled by high school counselors. Your high school counselor is still a very important and valuable resource, but often they are simply too busy supporting a large number of students to provide personal attention for all elements of your application.

-As an expert coming in from outside your family and social circle, I am able to objectively assess your background, experiences, and accomplishments, and help you build an application strategy that presents you at the best possible advantage to maximize your chances of being admitted to your preferred colleges.

-As an experienced counselor I can help you discover new and unexpected options and possibilities: new extracurriculars and opportunities to pursue your interests, new colleges and majors, new approaches to writing essays, new ways to show off your accomplishments on applications.

-From the time I graduated from high school until I started working full-time as a college counselor, my life has been closely tied to higher education. I have the experiences of being an undergraduate student, a graduate student, a teaching assistant, an instructor, an administrator, and a student research coordinator at very different universities. These roles have given me a unique perspective on the college experience itself and how it differs between institutions, which informs the recommendations I make to students.

  • -High school and college admissions can be very stressful. Teenagers are put under increasing pressure to balance advanced courses with time-consuming extracurriculars. While I encourage students to challenge themselves, I also recognize that their physical and emotional well-being will form the core of their future success, and can advise on maintaining a balanced lifestyle while working towards your dreams and goals.

-As someone outside the family, I can help diffuse disagreements or tensions by providing objective input and support. Parents can be relieved the anxiety of worrying about whether their kids are finishing their applications, and students often feel more comfortable talking about college, applications, and essays in a counseling space.

-During the college application process, I am someone you can talk to for reassurance. Many of my students worry about whether they are completing their applications correctly, applying to the right colleges, and writing effective essays. Sometimes, they get overwhelmed by the pressure to “get into a good college” that they perceive from their families, peers, and society in general–and perhaps most difficult of all, from within themselves. I have been through this myself, and talk students through this stress every year. You don’t have to do it alone!

  • "Working with Maia has not only been helpful but also enjoyable. Her expertise and experiences in the whole process really put me at ease as she guided me through the whole process. In addition to Maia's excellent college essay feedback and brainstorming, her affable personality made going through the whole college application process less daunting and intimidating."

    — Tim C.

“I first discovered Maia through her videos on drafting, writing, and editing UC Essays. I was blown away by how she broke down the process of writing UC Essays into simple steps that anyone could understand and follow. All the counsellors I’d encountered until then had made the process so complex. Using her guidelines, my daughter selected four questions to answer and wrote her essays, but we decided that we really wanted Maia to edit them as we valued her perspective. We weren’t disappointed. Maia’s edits were always encouraging but highlighted where the essays needed more details or a change in perspective. At the end my daughter had a set of essays that reflected her talents and personality as well as possible. But more importantly, thanks to Maia’s sensitive and positive encouragement, the whole process helped build my daughter’s confidence and faith in her own abilities. I’m so grateful that we found Maia in the sea of overwhelming college application information.”

“Maia was super encouraging and kind, very honest, and knew what she was doing. I got the experience of a phenomenal and professional college counselor, while also having someone who cared about me to guide me through an incredibly stressful experience. I looked forward to our meetings, because I knew that no matter what happened, Maia would be there to support, whether it be celebrating an acceptance or regrouping after a rejection. Beyond just guiding me on essays, she helped me research schools, find the university I ended up at, encouraged me to shoot my shot, and even helped me figure out my major. My college admissions experience was filled with insecurities and anxieties, but Maia helped me manage all of them in a very productive manner, and helped me end up with an undergrad experience that, after one year, I am absolutely loving.
